House Projects: Week 6

Our moving week has gone wonderfully! Everything is finally coming together at the house. We still have tons of projects we want to work on some day, but right now we are still just getting all settled in.

Living Room

Photo Studio/Guest Room

Dining Room

And Kevin finished up part of the basement office, which is clearly his special space since I get the photo studio!

We still have the bedroom, nursery, basement, front/back yard, and kitchen to go...but we are getting there. Things took a back seat when our niece was born yesterday, but we are hoping to have things more put together by the end of next week!

This week we also got to spend some time in the hammock outside together...because we smelled a gas leak in the basement and had to call the utility company. Just a small gas leak, which wasn't dangerous but we are glad we called. It's going on the every growing list of things we need to get done at the house.

Baby Journal: Week 19

Hi Baby,

This week we spent more of the week moving and unpacking the new house. It was really tough to not be as helpful as I wanted, but I worked too hard one day and had to spend the rest of the evening alternating between the couch and putting away dishes because I was so exhausted and feeling a little sick from pushing myself. It didn't help that it was a million degrees outside!

That being said, we are almost all moved into the new house. Your room is practically empty...but not for long because next week we will find out whether you're going to be a boy or girl...then we can get started on your nursery!

People ask me a lot....I mean a LOT...how I'm feeling. It feels like they want me to tell them I'm feeling awful, but in reality I feel great. Unless I'm walking up a couple flights of stairs, nothing much has changed with me.

With the move, I'm now even closer to work than ever. I determined I shaved off 40-50 minutes in my commute every day....which me…

Used vs. New Baby Items

We are in the middle of Week 19 of pregnancy, which means I'm already starting to think and plan about all the things we are going to need for our baby! I've been doing lots and lots of research for what we should buy used, new, register for or buy ourselves. Here is what I've come up with (why couldn't I find a list like this a couple weeks ago!)

Used
Clothing- Check consignment stores and thrift stores... I hear you often find lots of clothes with tags!
Bedding- You don't need all the items included at the store...like a quilt or bumper pads.
Toys- Kids outgrow them fast, and often kids would rather play with a box of Kleenex. Plastic toys clean easily, but check for recalls on things too (whether new or used)
Baby Gear- bouncy seats, bumbos, swings high chairs, bathtubs, things that a baby will likely outgrow fast. For example We bought a gently used bjorn ($20) and moby wrap ($15) on craigslist that we hope to be using.
Changing Table/Furniture- If you decide…

House Projects: Week 5

Moving day is today!!! Atleast of all of our big things moving day is today. We hired some firefighters to move our big things out of the apartment and into the new house. We've actually had a lot of time lately to work on the house, because I expected my niece to arrive last week...but she is taking her time...so that means more time for us to work!

One of my favorite projects this week was finishing up the bathroom (for now). I mentioned in a post from Monday that we painted, installed a new fixture, and framed the bathroom mirror to give it all a nice little update.
(before)
(after)

Our railing is finished as well. We would have left it natural, but there were already lots of paint splatters on it (and weird spots that weren't stained) from the previous owners.  BEFORE AFTER

This week we also had carpet installed in the bedroom. First, this was QUITE an experience for us. Not only because we knew absolutely nothing about picking out carpet (and I was totally over it so rea…

Baby Journal: Week 18

Hi Baby,

The weeks are flying by now!! Every week we learn a little more about you. They say you are the size of a pop can right now (from head to rump).

I took this picture in the middle of week 18, soon after a stranger noticed I was pregnant and asked me when I was due. You could tell she had a panic right after asking (since we all know you NEVER guess at that question) but I put her at ease by being so excited to tell a stranger about you!

We are starting to move you into the new home this week, and will be completely located there by the end of next week! Your room already has lots of little things and gifts from people that love you and area ready to meet you. We are excited to meet you too, but are glad you're going to spend a few more months growing before you're ready to see the world! (and mom and dad need more time to prepare too!)

We are still waiting anxiously for your cousin to arrive...she is now 1 week late (hurry up already!) You two will be between 4-5 month…

DIY Framing a Mirror

One of my bucket list projects for aesthetic changes around the new house, was updating the bathroom to look a little...cozier.  However, we weren't ready for an entire bathroom overhaul here, so we were looking for some easy things to make it look more updated.
The first, was our gray paint (rather than the yellow that was in here previously) The second was a new light fixture (around $80) And the third was framing the mirror so it didn't look so unfinished. (Total cost about $40)

I googled a lot of tutorials on how to frame a mirror before getting started. Here is what you need Molding in whatever color/style you want. You'll want to measure and cut it based on your mirror size. For us, it took 4 long pieces of molding (since it was a large mirror) and my brother in law cut it for us with his jigsaw. If you don't have someone handly like that, try using a Crown Molding Cutting Jigand you can just cut it with a normal saw.  Liquid Nail Painters tape on hand if you nee…

House projects: Week 4

Okay, this may be my absolute favorite week yet of projects. We did go ahead and postpone our move one more week, so we have another week before we are going to be moved in...but the things we did were the items that were the ones I was most excited about.

First, we painted the bedroom and bathroom!!! The yellow is GONE!!! I hated this yellow so much, and this was quite the task as part of the ceiling was over our stairway, so we couldn't even reach it with a tall ladder. Thanks to a well placed paintbrush on a pole, we fixed that problem. We went with a light gray, and absolutely love it.
(before photos...this really tones down the true yellow of what the walls actually are. )

(during painting with our new bathroom door installed!)

(After, with our lovely gray walls!)

And finally with our painted door and molding!

We also repainted the closet door,  molding and stair railing on the other side of the room, since it was the only thing left brown in the room.  We are now just wai…
