I'm Getting LASIK, and Here's Why

If you don't wear glasses or contacts, you may not understand the struggle I'm about to describe to you. My struggle is this:

These are my actual shampoo and conditioner bottles in my shower. Can you tell which set are shampoo and which are conditioner? Yeah, me neither. This is honestly what my bottles of hair product look like to me in the shower, as well as anything else when I don't have glasses on. When I started buying shampoo & conditioner that looked the exact same and have a toddler who loves to move around my bottles...it started driving me nuts. I have a system, rather than group brands of products together I put shampoo on one side of the shower, and conditioner on the other. I have a two year old who LOVES to move them around during the day...just one of the many ways she likes to make my life a little more challenging.

That is just one of the many reasons why I'd love to be able to see clearly without glasses. Another big event that happened this year, is one of the few times I put in contacts (I have a very hard time wearing contacts, as I've never found them to be comfortable) I accidentally tore one in half while it was still in my eye. Kevin and I spent over an hour trying to find it in my eye to be able to pull it out...it was absolutely terrifying and I was ready to go to a hospital. I've had a really hard time getting the nerve to put them in again.

My journey to LASIK started a few months ago when I looked into local vision correction. Actually, let me back up my journey actually started about 3 years ago when I decided to get a LASIK consult at a vision correction business in the Omaha area. They did a handful of tests around 5 tests total and told me with my astigmatism I would be able to have LASIK and rattled off a cost. It felt a little like a cattle call with lots of visitors, and not a lot of attention to my particular situation or needs. Needless to say, I didn't get LASIK at the time.

A few months ago I looked into a different vision correction provider in Omaha. This time, I went to Kugler Vision. I had heard wonderful things about the quality of care received, and was interested in a consult.

They did a total of 8 tests the day of my consult. The tests were less invasive than anything I've had at my eye doctor when getting prescription glasses. For example, you know that intense puff of air that you KNOW is coming, but scares you enough to jump every time? Well, they have a much easier test that doesn't make you jump! For each machine and test the specialist explains each step: Why the test is being done, what will occur, and walks you through what is happening while the test is being done. The majority of tests were simply looking at a certain color light, while a machine takes photos or maps the surface of your eye, absolutely nothing to it!

After being told I was a great candidate for LASIK (and the two doctors spending lots of time answering my millions of questions!) I scheduled the appointment! You know what I was most impressed by at my appointment? After years of visits to the eye doctor, many different appointments, consults and different optometrists, Dr. Kugler was able to tell me why I likely find contacts to be uncomfortable! I have low tear production, which means my eyes are getting dry when I wear contacts. I had no idea!

Apart from being able to see my shampoo bottles in the shower, here are a few others things I'm most excited about after not needing glasses or contacts!

- Being able to wear sunglasses without carrying around another case to put my glasses in
- Not looking at photos and feeling dated by my glasses. I hate being able to tell which year a photo was taken in based on my glasses.
- As mom of an infant and toddler, being able to wake up in the middle of the night and see immediately
- Take a casual snooze on the couch without fear that my glasses will "wander off" with my 2 year old
- Not spending hours upon hours trying to shop for new frames, knowing I am stuck with them for the next 2 years and that they will be forever captured in every selfie I take during that time.

I'm so excited for my LASIK procedure, and will be sharing all the cool details in later posts!

Traveling with Kids: Setting them up for successful flight

Each flight we take with our kids, we are often overwhelmed by fellow passengers commenting on how great our children travel. I won't even pretend that it has anything to do with my parenting or my children's innate ability to be good travelers. By no means does that come without a lot of behind the scenes work, thought and preparation. Our children are not naturally good travelers...rather we do everything possible to set them up for a successful (i.e. enjoyable, quiet, and somewhat relaxing) flight.

Do you want a toddler that doesn't make a peep when you travel? How about a baby who doesn't fuss too much? Here are a few of our secrets to setting your children up for a successful flight
It starts before you even book your trip.
Schedule your flight at a time that works well with your child's sleep schedule. That means no getting in at midnight, no leaving at 5 a.m...and for us we often try to avoid nap time as much as possible (once are kids are down to 1 nap a day…

Things You Learn About The Newborn Phase The Second Time Around

Look, we've all been there. As a first time mom you are totally crazy. You need every little thing imaginable to be able to raise your baby. Your baby has more places to be set down than you have chairs for everyone  else in your house...crib, saucer, bumbo, highchair, rock-n-play, play mat, swing...you get my point.
Now second time around, you might just do things a little differently! Here are a few things I learned my second time around:

My biggest secret? Your baby wakes up less at night the lower you turn down the monitor volume.
Think on that a minute...does that make me a bad mom? No! It means that I'm not waking up at every little thing! And allows Pepper learn to put herself back to sleep on her own after playing/talking a bit.

Don't even bother buying a baby book or it will be filled with "Date baby laughed 3 months?"  Yep..the question mark is actually written in the baby book, because I'm not 100% sure when she laughed.

You will forget everything tha…

Omaha Performing Arts: WeBop

If you're anything like me, you want to find all kinds of activities for your kids to get involved in as a way to educate, entertain and cultivate their physical and mental growth. For little ones, sometimes that is difficult to find. We've explored swim classes, sports, gymnastics...all great things, but we really wanted to look at something else for Lorelai to experience.

Music is such an important part of a child's life. Personally I believe that my involvement in music at a young age made me more successful and well-rounded! Due to involvement in choir, musicals and band I was able to gain confidence at a young age for public speaking, since I was familiar with standing in front of an audience. I also feel that reading music is such a great skill for children to learn as they grow older, along with familiarity with instruments, and to appreciate the arts. Not only that, music can help a child learn and retain information (example...do you still sing your ABC's in y…
