Have you tried the 14 Day Money Finder Challenge by Rachel Cruze. It is a once a day challenge for you to find a way to save money!
Day 8: Track your food spending. Go into your bank account and write down what you've actually spend on groceries and going out to eat. Don't estimate, really look and write it down.
Day 9: Change your food habits. Pack your lunch, buy generic and meal plan ahead of time. I will say, I already pack a lunch every day for work. We buy generic often, but decided to make some small changes in our cereal habits...as this is one place we've always bought name-brand. Meal planning has never been a good place for me, but with online grocery shopping (something we've done almost exclusively for a year+ now) it really has helped curb impulse buys on our groceries.
Day 10: Spend the hidden $20. Again...I struggle with how this is really beneficial, but I know there is psychology behind why she adds this in here. We spent it on a "new" (used but new to us) camera for Lorelai to practice her photography on.
Day 11: Write down your housing costs. Mortgage/Rent, utilities, insurance...everything from electric bills to phone and cable bills...write it all down. We already have this budgeted decently well and tracked since using EveryDollar this year.
Day 12: Find ways to save on housing bills. The temperature of our house is probably the biggest way for us to save, and unplugging unnecessary items to cut back on our electric bill. We also have a heater in Lorelai's room and last week started putting her in fleece PJs and a toddler sleep sac rather than running the heater all night. We haven't had cable in over 5 years now, and keep our internet package minimal. Rather than finding money by cutting out items, our best bet has been to cut back on what we already have and use instead!
Day 13: Track your insurance spending last month. We actually are pretty diligent about getting a re-quote on insurance every year. This has really helped us keep insurance more affordable and catching any mistakes or things we didn't know we were paying for. It is a good reminder to do this on the regular!
Day 14: How much did you find? Well, until we get a better idea of how our small changes affect our electric bill, food bill, entertainment etc....I don't have a number to give you. But I can say this gave us the boost we needed to make some changes that will help us save each month! Especially moving Lorelai to fleece PJs instead of running a heater all night!
