We Grow As One: Benson

We are kicking off our highlight of Omaha's local economy and our unique sense of community, with one of the areas closest to our home...Benson!  Technically we live exactly 1 mile from both Benson and Dundee, but I couldn't decide which of these vibrant local communities to highlight first!  Therefore, the obvious choice was to start in alphabetical order.

BENSON

If you're an Omaha native, Benson is likely not the same Benson you grew up with. Actually, to be honest none of these communities are anything like what they were when I graduated high school 11 years ago. What I especially love about Benson is what I call the "young professional" vibe. It's not something I can put my finger on...but rather it's a feeling.

Our favorite places in Benson? Well let me tell you!

Ted & Wally's- You may be thinking "Wait a minute...this awesome ice cream shop is downtown!" And although you would be correct, they opened up a shop here just in the last couple years. Why do we love it more than the downtown location? Proximity for one, but also because the Benson locations doesn’t have the crazy line you might encounter downtown! I loved this place especially when I was on my dairy-free diet due to Lorelai's MSPI when she was born. It's not easy to find dairy-free ice cream! Better yet, Kevin thinks the ice cream is divine!

Aromas Coffeehouse- Not only does this place often have amazing music courtesy of the (402) Arts Collective (which lives just above Aromas) but the coffee is … oh so amazing. Sit out on the back patio, or on one of their cool vintage couches. You'll find lots of college student's studying, small groups hanging out...or maybe even me and Lorelai having one of our mother-daughter dates. Want to grab coffee on the go? They have the cutest little walk-up window where you can order your coffee without stepping foot in the coffee shop! Like Ted & Wally’s, they also have a shop downtown (more the merrier, right?) I love this video of owner Autumn Pruitt sharing how her coffee + bakery vision came to life!

Found Vintage Market- This area of Omaha is chalk full of old homes (like our super cute 1920's home) which is the perfect place for the vintage market. It is one of the newer stores in Benson, but come here to find gorgeous vintage furniture pieces that have been lovingly painted and restored into some amazing statement pieces.

Hartland Bar-B-Que- To be honest I could have picked an entire host of places to eat/drink in Benson...but this one is our personal favorite. Why? Kevin and I joke that we "just aren't hipster" enough to make any of the other restaurants our "go-to". Trust me, we love the restaurants in Benson, and you can visit any one of them and leave with a fantastic experience. This one is a just a couple blocks down from the heart of Benson, but it is worth it. We love BBQ, and this is our ultimate Omaha favorite. Don't be expecting a fine-dining experience, rather this is an incredibly casual eatery...but do go in expecting some delicious food!

Why are we  highlighting  local shops within the community? Our neighbors, friends and family are all influenced...both directly and indirectly by small business success, and when we come together, we grow as one! First National Bank of Omaha is sponsoring this post, but all thoughts are mine.

Traveling with Kids: Setting them up for successful flight

Each flight we take with our kids, we are often overwhelmed by fellow passengers commenting on how great our children travel. I won't even pretend that it has anything to do with my parenting or my children's innate ability to be good travelers. By no means does that come without a lot of behind the scenes work, thought and preparation. Our children are not naturally good travelers...rather we do everything possible to set them up for a successful (i.e. enjoyable, quiet, and somewhat relaxing) flight.

Do you want a toddler that doesn't make a peep when you travel? How about a baby who doesn't fuss too much? Here are a few of our secrets to setting your children up for a successful flight
It starts before you even book your trip.
Schedule your flight at a time that works well with your child's sleep schedule. That means no getting in at midnight, no leaving at 5 a.m...and for us we often try to avoid nap time as much as possible (once are kids are down to 1 nap a day…

Things You Learn About The Newborn Phase The Second Time Around

Look, we've all been there. As a first time mom you are totally crazy. You need every little thing imaginable to be able to raise your baby. Your baby has more places to be set down than you have chairs for everyone  else in your house...crib, saucer, bumbo, highchair, rock-n-play, play mat, swing...you get my point.
Now second time around, you might just do things a little differently! Here are a few things I learned my second time around:

My biggest secret? Your baby wakes up less at night the lower you turn down the monitor volume.
Think on that a minute...does that make me a bad mom? No! It means that I'm not waking up at every little thing! And allows Pepper learn to put herself back to sleep on her own after playing/talking a bit.

Don't even bother buying a baby book or it will be filled with "Date baby laughed 3 months?"  Yep..the question mark is actually written in the baby book, because I'm not 100% sure when she laughed.

You will forget everything tha…

Omaha Performing Arts: WeBop

If you're anything like me, you want to find all kinds of activities for your kids to get involved in as a way to educate, entertain and cultivate their physical and mental growth. For little ones, sometimes that is difficult to find. We've explored swim classes, sports, gymnastics...all great things, but we really wanted to look at something else for Lorelai to experience.

Music is such an important part of a child's life. Personally I believe that my involvement in music at a young age made me more successful and well-rounded! Due to involvement in choir, musicals and band I was able to gain confidence at a young age for public speaking, since I was familiar with standing in front of an audience. I also feel that reading music is such a great skill for children to learn as they grow older, along with familiarity with instruments, and to appreciate the arts. Not only that, music can help a child learn and retain information (example...do you still sing your ABC's in y…
