House Recap

Our perfect little house went on the market this week. We have loved this house for over a year now, but we found a new house we love even more. In celebration of the house being under contract to sell, we wanted to recap everything we've done in the last 15 months.

Outside: New shutters (and painted some of the old). Kevin installed a beautiful new storm door. We took off the rust from the old railings, and painted them black. We had the railings welded in broken places.

We didn't have to do much here, but did have the fireplace painted and chimney swept. In the entire main floor of the house, we had the floors refinished, which they were in desperate need of.

Kitchen: Painted Kitchen. We also removed some HUGE box stereo speakers and old doorbell speaker (the wires of which were covered up by a smoke detector) and had drywall placed over it.

Back Entry: We had a drywall guy come and drywall over the super weird texture all over the entry way, and had holes fixed that had been punched in the wall. Then we had so much fun making this cute striped pattern and adding new hanging fixtures.

Stairs to the basement: Added a railing (because Kevin didn't want his preggo wife to fall!) and painted the wood paneling
Basement: There was a large (400-500 square foot) part of the basement that was unfinished that was screaming for a little TLC. We converted it into an office for Kevin by having the floors painted and the ceiling sprayed black. We love it! We didn't do much to the finished part except paint the doors.

(Our basement now...it got a little paint makeover)

This place was gross storage (gross walls....gross floors....everything)

Laundry Room: The laundry room was our very first project in the home, because we were able to work on it with other things being done. We painted the floor, parts of the walls, and hung our huge "Laundry" sign that I love so much.

(After)

Guest Bedrooms & Nursery: We installed new fixtures (see below) and a fan in the studio/guest room. The didn't need to paint much in the hall/main bath/bedrooms or do much else. Throughout the house we had electrical work done to allow us to hang fixtures up to code, change around some weird wiring in switches that made zero sense.

Master Suite: This one was the biggest change for us. First, it was SUNSHINE yellow. (the photos on the listing don't do it justice). We painted the entire hall, ceiling, walls, bath...everything to tone this down. We replaced carpet to plush lovely carpet throughout. We had lights installed in the bedroom to allow for overhead lighting. We framed the mirror to give it a little TLC and put a new light fixture in. Then our favorite part, we had the bathroom closed off from the main bedroom (who would want that open???). Then painted everything to match.

In the process of ripping up carpet and painting!

Backyard: The prior owners had a trampoline which killed the grass in a large part of the yard. They threw mulch over it...so we spent a bunch of time digging that up and reseeding this summer. It was a great project. The owners also decided a good idea was to cut a hole into the garage and set a fridge in the opening....a fridge! We decided rather than a fridge, a door was much more needed it its place, so we had that cut into the side with a few steps.
weird fridge.....

Honestly, we are so sad to see this house go. We've loved it...truly we have. We love the 1920s charm, beautiful wood floors, and especially the neighborhood. But looking back at everything we've done these past 15 months of work...it is wonderful! It is amazing to think when we bought this house we had JUST found out about little Lorelai (although we did not know she would be a girl!) and things have truly changed so much for us!

Every time I read your blog I am amazed at all you have accomplished. Congratulations on the updates you did to your old home, and the fun you will have making your new home your own. I am going to continue to read your blog and try to motivate myself to be as industrious as you and Kevin are!!!

Traveling with Kids: Setting them up for successful flight

Each flight we take with our kids, we are often overwhelmed by fellow passengers commenting on how great our children travel. I won't even pretend that it has anything to do with my parenting or my children's innate ability to be good travelers. By no means does that come without a lot of behind the scenes work, thought and preparation. Our children are not naturally good travelers...rather we do everything possible to set them up for a successful (i.e. enjoyable, quiet, and somewhat relaxing) flight.

Do you want a toddler that doesn't make a peep when you travel? How about a baby who doesn't fuss too much? Here are a few of our secrets to setting your children up for a successful flight
It starts before you even book your trip.
Schedule your flight at a time that works well with your child's sleep schedule. That means no getting in at midnight, no leaving at 5 a.m...and for us we often try to avoid nap time as much as possible (once are kids are down to 1 nap a day…

Things You Learn About The Newborn Phase The Second Time Around

Look, we've all been there. As a first time mom you are totally crazy. You need every little thing imaginable to be able to raise your baby. Your baby has more places to be set down than you have chairs for everyone  else in your house...crib, saucer, bumbo, highchair, rock-n-play, play mat, swing...you get my point.
Now second time around, you might just do things a little differently! Here are a few things I learned my second time around:

My biggest secret? Your baby wakes up less at night the lower you turn down the monitor volume.
Think on that a minute...does that make me a bad mom? No! It means that I'm not waking up at every little thing! And allows Pepper learn to put herself back to sleep on her own after playing/talking a bit.

Don't even bother buying a baby book or it will be filled with "Date baby laughed 3 months?"  Yep..the question mark is actually written in the baby book, because I'm not 100% sure when she laughed.

You will forget everything tha…

Omaha Performing Arts: WeBop

If you're anything like me, you want to find all kinds of activities for your kids to get involved in as a way to educate, entertain and cultivate their physical and mental growth. For little ones, sometimes that is difficult to find. We've explored swim classes, sports, gymnastics...all great things, but we really wanted to look at something else for Lorelai to experience.

Music is such an important part of a child's life. Personally I believe that my involvement in music at a young age made me more successful and well-rounded! Due to involvement in choir, musicals and band I was able to gain confidence at a young age for public speaking, since I was familiar with standing in front of an audience. I also feel that reading music is such a great skill for children to learn as they grow older, along with familiarity with instruments, and to appreciate the arts. Not only that, music can help a child learn and retain information (example...do you still sing your ABC's in y…
