Baby Journal: Week 34

Hi Lorelai,

Boy (...or Girl I should say...) things sure can change in a week. Last week it was all photo sessions getting scheduled in around work...and this week was all about baby! From meeting with a Pediatrician, Birthing Class, Breastfeeding Class and yet another Dr. Appointment...it's been crazy!

Birthing class was quite the production. It wasn't that Kevin and I learned a ton, but really it just forced us to sit down and think about things we were previously avoiding (like the pain of childbirth and what we wanted the birth plan to be). Your dad did awesome at the first pretend diaper change.

We have a pediatrician, so knock that off the list too! The breastfeeding class was encouraging...it was very "you can do it and here is how" which I loved.

Your dad and I worked on your closet this weekend. Here is the deal, you probably have the worst closet in the house...so....sorry about that. Your closet is about a foot deep (to put this in perspective an adult sized hanger is 17 inches long....so this closet is not deep enough to hang adult sized clothes in it the normal way) but then it stretches about 8 foot wide...however, only about 2 feet of it has door access. That means 6ft of your closet is just this super awkward narrow space that you have to climb inside the closet to reach. One of the downsides to buying a home built in the 1920s.
(Before)

So your dad and I came up with some good storage solutions. He hung 4 rods across the width of the closet, and we suspended one from the ceiling in the middle of the closet. We also build in a shelf to help with more storage, and now we have a much more functioning closet for all your cute little baby things!

(it's hard to get a photo of this closet, seeing as how I'm basically too wide to fit in there)

(After)

Also everyone seemed very concerned I was going to fall down our basement stairs while pregnant, that I came home on Monday to find that your dad was installing a handrail for me. Safety first!

We had another perfect doctor's visit this week..and now you'll start getting checked out every single week! You're just how you're supposed to be (head down) and my tummy is measuring on schedule! We had a talk about what happens if you don't want to come out on time, but I'm still planning to do everything I can to make sure you know that you should come out on your own.

My nesting stage is in full force. Yesterday we had carpet cleaners over to clean our carpets in the basement...and it was glorious. I've decided that for nesting I'm all about hiring things to get done. We did the cost analysis for renting and doing it ourselves, and it would have saved us probably $50...but would have cost me probably hours in time plus we would have needed help moving the furniture. Hiring this out was more than worth it for me.

Oh and I THINK we've picked a middle name for you! Which would be great because so far we've been really stuck on any names. It's not that we had a bunch of names we loved....we haven't had ANY we liked, so it's been tough.

Symptoms: Same swollen fingers and feet as I've been dealing with, just on a pretty permanent basis now. The doctor gave some suggestions to help, but so far I've got the same chubby fingers and feet as before! I am still blown away at how out of breath I am sometimes...from taking the walk from my car to my desk at work, to reading aloud in my MBA class, to even having a conversation with someone at work that stops me in the hall (when I've been walking and need to stop to catch my breath in between sentences).

Promise: I promise to do my best to be a Mary when it comes to you, rather than a Martha. In life, I'm much more of a Martha and don't do a great job stopping to live in the moment and invest in my relationships with people. I want learn to sit and enjoy every minute we have together.

Love that last promise to Lorelai. You will never regret just spending time with your child, rather than worrying about all the "stuff" that needs to be done. And then she will be old enough that you can enjoy time doing the "stuff" together.

Traveling with Kids: Setting them up for successful flight

Each flight we take with our kids, we are often overwhelmed by fellow passengers commenting on how great our children travel. I won't even pretend that it has anything to do with my parenting or my children's innate ability to be good travelers. By no means does that come without a lot of behind the scenes work, thought and preparation. Our children are not naturally good travelers...rather we do everything possible to set them up for a successful (i.e. enjoyable, quiet, and somewhat relaxing) flight.

Do you want a toddler that doesn't make a peep when you travel? How about a baby who doesn't fuss too much? Here are a few of our secrets to setting your children up for a successful flight
It starts before you even book your trip.
Schedule your flight at a time that works well with your child's sleep schedule. That means no getting in at midnight, no leaving at 5 a.m...and for us we often try to avoid nap time as much as possible (once are kids are down to 1 nap a day…

Things You Learn About The Newborn Phase The Second Time Around

Look, we've all been there. As a first time mom you are totally crazy. You need every little thing imaginable to be able to raise your baby. Your baby has more places to be set down than you have chairs for everyone  else in your house...crib, saucer, bumbo, highchair, rock-n-play, play mat, swing...you get my point.
Now second time around, you might just do things a little differently! Here are a few things I learned my second time around:

My biggest secret? Your baby wakes up less at night the lower you turn down the monitor volume.
Think on that a minute...does that make me a bad mom? No! It means that I'm not waking up at every little thing! And allows Pepper learn to put herself back to sleep on her own after playing/talking a bit.

Don't even bother buying a baby book or it will be filled with "Date baby laughed 3 months?"  Yep..the question mark is actually written in the baby book, because I'm not 100% sure when she laughed.

You will forget everything tha…

Omaha Performing Arts: WeBop

If you're anything like me, you want to find all kinds of activities for your kids to get involved in as a way to educate, entertain and cultivate their physical and mental growth. For little ones, sometimes that is difficult to find. We've explored swim classes, sports, gymnastics...all great things, but we really wanted to look at something else for Lorelai to experience.

Music is such an important part of a child's life. Personally I believe that my involvement in music at a young age made me more successful and well-rounded! Due to involvement in choir, musicals and band I was able to gain confidence at a young age for public speaking, since I was familiar with standing in front of an audience. I also feel that reading music is such a great skill for children to learn as they grow older, along with familiarity with instruments, and to appreciate the arts. Not only that, music can help a child learn and retain information (example...do you still sing your ABC's in y…
