Kevin and I have a
new found respect for Uber while traveling. Not only did it saves us a bunch of
money (and time) taking Uber to/from the airport rather than parking and paying
about $5-6 a day for the long term parking lot, but we even used it traveling
in Europe! Normally we are huge fans of public transportation as we have never
taken a cab while traveling and always use the most economical means of travel
possible (we pride ourselves on budget travel).
This was the first trip that we did the math on our way from our Airbnb (you
can read more about our love for Airbnb here as well as get coupon codes for
hosing and traveling) to the hotel. Since Zurich was not a huge city, we ended up paying about $8 more ($4 per person) for a Uber ride rather than using the
bus system. The bus would have taken us about 45 minutes, but because of the
uncertainty of bus schedules we were planning on leaving about 75 minutes early
to account for uncertainties. Also, Kevin was in charge of our suitcase which
weighed a lot (sorry Kevin) since we packed together due to not wanting me to
have to deal with an extra bag this time because of the pregnancy. Anyway,
Kevin was exhausted from hauling the bag on/off subways, buses and trains throughout the trip. So we also avoided the 6 minute walk to the station, and
the transfer from bus to train and back to bus.
Would public transport have worked just fine? Of course! But spending the extra
$8 was totally worth every penny.
So here is the best part, we weren't using cell services to get our Uber. We
try to always stay somewhere that we have wifi, so we made the request using
the Uber application and wifi. We read up ahead of time and we were told to
consider taking a screen shot of the driver information before they arrived, a
shot when they arrived, and again when we arrived at our destination. This was
because we didn't have WiFi until about 12 hours later, and we had no idea how
much the Uber cost until we logged back in to our phones when we arrived in the
states. We did however get an estimate before we left, which is our experience was very accurate!
So what is our conclusion? Uber is a great resource while traveling, but if you
use it for everyday on the trip, I anticipate most times public transportation
is going to be the way to go in many cities. They often have public transport
for the reason that the cities are so crowded, that the public transport will
get you there as fast/faster as well as much more inexpensively!
Also, Uber ended up costing us a total of $12 to get from the airport to our house as well when we arrived home safely! It saved us a lot of money compared to parking our car at the airport for 2 weeks!
